CNN —Steven Spielberg had words of caution and hope on Monday while accepting an honor from the University of Southern California. Celina Biniaz, 92, one of the last living Holocaust survivors from Oskar Schindler’s List, was also honored at the event. In my grandparents’ home Cincinnati, Ohio where I lived until I was three, my grandmother, Jenny, taught English to Hungarian Holocaust survivors. In listening to them, the echoes of history are unmistakable in our current climate. These 56,000 testimonies that we have recorded are a foundation upon which bridges can be built, and we here at the USC Shoah Foundation are building those bridges.

Born at the tail end of World War II, I grew up with antisemitism by and large under control, as even vicious Jew haters were reticent to attack Jews. Rabbi Avi Weiss Courtesy Avi WeissThis doesn’t mean anti-Semitism was not a serious problem, especially in recent decades. During the Cold War, Soviet antisemitism came to the fore with a vengeance after the Second World War. However, the concept of one tiny Jewish state, the only Western-style democracy in the Middle East, is constantly rejected and attacked. But the State of Israel, and only the State of Israel, allows Jews to save themselves.

Any filmmaker trying to draw meaning from the Holocaust onscreen faces potential pitfalls. Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a dark horse candidate for best picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday, avoids all of these traps and finds something new and profoundly unsettling to say about the Holocaust. “Zone” is ostensibly about the genocide of European Jewry, but its focus is not on the Jewish victims, who remain almost entirely offscreen. Rather, Mr. Glazer exposes the perpetrators to the scrutiny of the audience’s gaze. “Zone” depicts the life of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, and his family at their handsome estate just outside the walls of the death camp.

The German government rejected South Africa's genocide allegations against Israel at the ICJ. Germany is set to intervene on Israel's behalf at the international court. "The German government decisively and expressly rejects the accusation of genocide brought against Israel before the International Court of Justice," Hebestreit said. Germany will be allowed to present its own case disputing South Africa's allegation of genocide against Israel, according to reports. The Israeli defense called South Africa's accusations of genocide "baseless, arguing that the stated aim of Israel was the destruction of the Hamas terrorist organization and liberating the hostages that remained imprisoned in Gaza.

Scholz was speaking at a ceremony at a Berlin synagogue to mark "Kristallnacht" alongside Jewish leaders. "Every form of antisemitism poisons our society," said Scholz, who was wearing a kippah, the traditional Jewish cap, as is customary in a synagogue for men. A 10-minute video by German Economy Minister Robert Habeck expressing concern over rising antisemitism went viral last week. Indeed, new citizenship rules make clear that anyone who is antisemitic cannot receive German citizenship, Scholz said on Thursday. It was one of the world’s 10 largest Jewish centres, and many of Germany’s leading scientists were Berlin Jews.

REUTERS/Tobias Schlie/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsBERLIN, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Antisemitism has risen in Germany since Hamas's attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, the head of a German anti-discrimination think-tank said, warning that Germans had become too willing to ignore their own past crimes and criticise Israel. Sociologist Beate Kuepper said 5.7% of the population showed antisemitic attitudes, three times the level of two years ago. "In these debates, the role of Israel-related antisemitism was diminished," he said. "They said it was fine to criticise Israel from the country of the Shoah." "In many milieus that see themselves as progressive, anti-Israel positions are almost a matter of good taste," Lelle said.

CNN —When a large Jewish cemetery was paved over last century to create a sports ground in Belarus, the headstones were used to make roads and buildings. Brest, also known as Brest-Litovsk, had been a hub of Jewish life before World War II, with Jewish residents first recorded there in the 14th century. Debra Brunner of The Together Plan stands in a warehouse in Brest, surrounded by the broken headstones. The Together PlanThe first stage of the desecration began during the war, when the Nazis tried to destroy the cemetery by selling off the headstones. His whole family other than his nuclear family was murdered.”He added: “In 1997 there were no signs of the cemetery.

Online posts, however, miscaption the photo with the names of infamous concentration camps, such as Auschwitz, or falsely characterize the actual Slovak labour camp in the photo, Nováky, as a Nazi-run concentration camp. Senior historian at Yad Vashem Robert Rozett told Reuters via email that Nováky was not a concentration camp. UPN’s Jašek said that having a swimming pool was not usual for Slovak concentration and forced-labour camps. EXTERMINATION, CONCENTRATION CAMPSPaweł Sawicki, a spokesperson for the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum (here), told Reuters via email that concentration camps and extermination camps were different to forced-labour camps. The photo shows a forced-labour camp in Slovakia, where, according to three historians, conditions were different to those at Nazi-run concentration camps.

This month’s mix of titles leaving Netflix in the United States include two coming-of-age comedy dramas, a twisty thriller throwback, a wrenching Holocaust documentary and two uproarious comedies (one of them smuggled into an animated family film). Give them a stream before they’re gone. (Dates reflect the last day a title is available.) (It was the early 2010s, so there is also a healthy dose of villainy for the health-care and pharmaceutical industries.) Stream it here.
